As a disabled person and disability advocate, I’d like to highlight a popular topic within the disability community. We have a vital opportunity to discuss how best to support not only our medical needs, but also our mental and emotional health surrounding having a disability in an ableist society.

In having these conversations, we must center the voices and experiences of disabled people. Interestingly, this topic is not often well understood.

Perhaps it is forgotten because a physical disability is more obvious, or because it complicates the concept of supporting a marginalized community.

They both impact the GI tract. However, there’s one big difference: inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can cause harm to the GI tract, and IBS is a syndrome that comprises a handful of symptoms that don’t cause harm to the GI tract. So while the symptoms of each may look similar, IBD is chronic and often calls for a serious, ongoing treatment plan (but IBS can be difficult as well, so if you’re reading this and live with IBS, I totally feel for you!).
