Was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder, mild depression, A.D.D. and dyslexia in the third grade. Let’s just say nobody really knew anything about mental health or learning disabilities at the time.

If kids found out you were different in any way you instantly became a target. Some teachers were the same way and it became intimidating and crushed any confidence I had left.

The state also didn’t want me in general education classes because my testing scores were way below average. But what they didn’t know was that I was also struggling with anxiety and depression and that can impact your performance.I worked really hard to get to where I am now.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 19 years ago when I was at TAFE. It came as a bit of a shock as I could not fathom how this could happen to me. I didn’t know much about mental illness or bipolar, but by getting help very early on I was able to get back on track and return to my schooling. I’ve been lucky to have the support of my family and friends and excellent doctors to help me in my recovery journey.

Bipolar can make you act like a huge arsehole. It can be really hard for people around you to keep up. I know that I am exhausting to be around. My everyday life is fairly ordinary. I work as a temporary lecturer and am also a freelance trainer, teaching a variety of subjects to adults in college and at business premises.  I have been doing this for less than a year, and it is quite fun in contrast to the heavy workload I had previously as a college manager.   I travel to and from work on the London Underground and packed buses, and in previous roles I spent most of my week travelling to and fro across London on visits to businesses, taking speeding lifts to offices in buildings I had never visited before.

When I first came into contact with phobic patients in my work with Professor Isaac Marks at the Maudsley Hospital, some 20 years ago, I was quickly struck by how many female patients described the worsening of their symptoms in the few days before their periods. An increase not just in the general pre-menstrual symptoms but in the tendency to panic, to become more anxious and to experience a heightening of the physical symptoms of anxiety.

The causes of anxiety and stress are complex. Some people do not eat properly due to their symptoms, a feeling of nausea or because of the effects of drugs. Some people comfort eats with a lot of sugary snacks.  When we are anxious it may feel like we have no energy.  This is because when anxious our body has to work extremely hard so we need to provide as much energy as we can; we do this by the food we eat.

I was in my early 20’s when I started getting anxiety, although I had some issues as a kid. At the age of 3 I had alopecia, I wouldn’t sleep, and drove my parents round the bend, I was put on barbiturates, I also had an imaginary friend, and wet the bed. I always felt like I had to protect my parents from certain things, that happened in my life, even when I was wee. I was always scared of being abandoned too, I hated when they went out, I wouldn’t sleep till they came home.

Mary’s Story
I was born in 1937. My mother had extreme post-natal depression and was sent to a mental health hospital, which many people considered shameful in those days. Until I was 11, I was brought up by my grandmother and aunt and was just told that my mother had been ill. I had an older brother who lived with my father (grandmother’s son) and mother. My father often came to see me and gave me much love, as did my grandmother and aunt.

I have lived with my anxiety disorder for most of my life, but it really started at aged 15, when I was so acutely anxious I had to take six weeks off school during my GCSE year. I was suffering from an agitated depression, an episode that left me reeling. I was so young and so unwell. How I found myself again after losing hope
At the beginning of 2019, I was at my lowest point. For the past three years, I had been suffering badly with horrible mood swings triggered by an operation I’d had that had thrown my hormones out of balance.
