Hi all, I am a 40 year old male and I started to panic in the beginning of 2004 all from an inner ear infection.I was working at the time and I have 2-3 weeks off work and was stuck indoors all that time due to my ear.

When I thought I was better I decided to go back to work as soon as I opened the front door that was it bang a full blown panic attack I was so scared.

I thought I was having a heart attack the wife at the time and called for an ambulance. They arrived very quickly and done an E.C.G.

I should begin by saying that I am not a fan of using words that have a Greek derivation to describe phobic states. Indeed, some years ago I was attending a quiz night, when the topic of fears and phobias came up. Those at my table, recognising my expertise in this area, played a Joker card – i.e. double points in this particular round. My team only answered three out of ten questions correctly because, much to my embarrassment, I did not recognise the Greek terminology! Having said that, I did study Latin at school and had a superficial knowledge of Greek, but this was to no avail and I spent the rest of the evening in deep embarrassment. Therefore, a simple message – tell it as it is – in plain English!

Panic Attacks – Jo’s Story
My everyday life is fairly ordinary. I work as a temporary lecturer and am also a freelance trainer, teaching a variety of subjects to adults in college and at business premises.  I have been doing this for less than a year, and it is quite fun in contrast to the heavy workload I had previously as a college manager.   I travel to and from work on the London Underground and packed buses, and in previous roles I spent most of my week travelling to and fro across London on visits to businesses, taking speeding lifts to offices in buildings I had never visited before.

Karen’s Anxiety Story
I was in my early 20’s when I started getting anxiety, although I had some issues as a kid. At the age of 3 I had alopecia, I wouldn’t sleep, and drove my parents round the bend, I was put on barbiturates, I also had an imaginary friend, and wet the bed. I always felt like I had to protect my parents from certain things, that happened in my life, even when I was wee. I was always scared of being abandoned too, I hated when they went out, I wouldn’t sleep till they came home.

Mary’s Story
I was born in 1937. My mother had extreme post-natal depression and was sent to a mental health hospital, which many people considered shameful in those days. Until I was 11, I was brought up by my grandmother and aunt and was just told that my mother had been ill. I had an older brother who lived with my father (grandmother’s son) and mother. My father often came to see me and gave me much love, as did my grandmother and aunt.

I’m Karen and I have a phobia of toilets. There, I said it, I’m out. For some reason, unknown to me, I think the toilet is going to get me, or the pipes will burst, or that it will flush whilst I’m using it. I know none of that will happen, but it terrifies me every day. It’s the subject of much amusement among friends and family, but to me, it’s not funny, it’s simply terrifying.

I have lived with my anxiety disorder for most of my life, but it really started at aged 15, when I was so acutely anxious I had to take six weeks off school during my GCSE year. I was suffering from an agitated depression, an episode that left me reeling. I was so young and so unwell. It was partly triggered by stressful life events but what I didn’t know at that time was that my anxiety and depression was part of a wider illness- bipolar disorder.
