In this podcast we discuss the onset of emetophobia, an eating disorder, generalised anxiety disorder and the process of recovery including the less well known humanistic integrative therapy.

Beth from Miss Anxiety developed Anorexia, Emetophobia & GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) from an early age – after learning more about these conditions during her time spent in recovery, she has become passionate about spreading awareness and the idea that mental illness does not spell “the end”.

I should begin by saying that I am not a fan of using words that have a Greek derivation to describe phobic states. Indeed, some years ago I was attending a quiz night, when the topic of fears and phobias came up. Those at my table, recognising my expertise in this area, played a Joker card – i.e. double points in this particular round. My team only answered three out of ten questions correctly because, much to my embarrassment, I did not recognise the Greek terminology! Having said that, I did study Latin at school and had a superficial knowledge of Greek, but this was to no avail and I spent the rest of the evening in deep embarrassment. Therefore, a simple message – tell it as it is – in plain English!

Nervous Breakdown
A Nervous Breakdown is a term which describes a relatively short period of extreme negative feelings, thoughts and symptoms. The often last a few days to a week and then the feelings thoughts and symptoms subside at least little. It is common to have suicidal ideation, feelings of want to or acts of self harm and the lack of willingness and energy to do even the simplest of tasks. These symptoms often don’t last after the breakdown and it is uncommon that you would be allowed into hospital after suffering one. That would only happen if you are a serious risk to yourself or others.
