25 Essential Articles for Adults with ADHD
By Ellen Littman, Ph.D.“Generally, non-ADHD brains can self-regulate with relative confidence, and exercise an adequate amount of control over their behavior. Many challenges brought on by ADHD are “invisible” or easily blamed on laziness. Individuals with ADHD are uniquely impacted by video games, screen time, and technology, which we know can fragment attention, increase distraction, and potentially worsen social isolation. But can digital technology be harnessed to expand working memory, increase concentration, and improve ADHD symptoms in children, adolescents, and adults? The Grave Consequences of Persistent Gender Role Expectations in ADHD
For many years, ADHD was believed to impact only males — and the research reflects that. It wasn’t until 1993 that NIH-funded clinical studies on ADHD were required to include women. We’ve come a long way, but missed ADHD symptoms and underdiagnosis are still common among females with the condition.“Because of stigma as well as thoughts related to gender role presentations, ADHD symptoms in females can be thought of as more likely due to anxiety or depression,” says Dave Anderson, Ph.D., of the Child Mind Institute, in the video above.

“Students with Learning Differences Need Outspoken Champions”
As a child growing up in the ‘80s, I was bombarded with messages about “stranger danger.” Imagine my surprise, then, when a stranger arrived at the door of my second-grade classroom to take me away, and no one seemed to think it strange.I obediently rose from my small desk to meet said stranger, who had lots of questions for me as we made our way down the hallway: How old was I? 8. Did I have any brothers or sisters? Yes, three. Which hand did I use to write? I raised my left hand when I meant to raise my right – a nervous mistake. The stranger and I made our way to a small, windowless room I had never seen before, where other children around my age, unfamiliar to me, were sitting at a large, oddly shaped table.

Why Are We (Still) Failing Students with ADHD?
We’ve come a long way in our understanding and treatment of ADHD. Decades of well-executed studies have yielded a vast collection of articles that resulted in greater understanding of the developmental course of ADHD and the contemporary perception of ADHD as a lifespan condition.Today, we understand the importance of studying the functional impact of ADHD, including the impediments it may represent, the strengths inherent in an ADHD profile, and the impact of the condition on daily living, social interactions, and academic or professional performance. Yet I am convinced that many of the gains made over the past 25 year have not found their way into the classroom.I am a clinician, teacher, consultant to schools, and writer.

Study Finds Higher Prevalence of ADHD in Adult Migraine Patients
October 10, 2023Adults who suffer from migraines have a higher prevalence of ADHD symptoms, a new study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders found.1 While studies have previously demonstrated the higher incidence of migraines in ADHD patients,2 this study is the first to show that the association works the other way, establishing a bidirectional relationship between the two conditions. In addition, most previous studies were conducted in children or adolescents and were based on patients with ADHD who were assessed for migraines.

ADDitude Readers Take a Stab at Renaming ADHD
What’s in a name? To many people, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is an inaccurate term for a condition marked by hyperfocus and, less frequently, by outward hyperactivity. The name also ignores the combination of strengths, advantages, and challenges that accompany a diagnosis.ADHD was not included in the DSM until 1968, when it was called Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood.

Adult ADHD Is Real — and Still Heavily Stigmatized
Last month, Psychiatric Times published a controversial and off-putting opinion piece titled, “The Making of Adult ADHD,”1 which calls ADHD in adulthood one of psychiatry’s “fads” in “theory, diagnosis, and treatment.” It argues, quite weakly, that adult ADHD is not a scientifically valid diagnosis; the authors instead attribute persistent symptoms to the effects of mood temperaments, which is conveniently a topic of research interest for at least one of them. The essay’s authors, psychiatrist Nassir Ghaemi, M.D. (Tufts University School of Medicine), and Mark L.
