I’ve been demonized by friends & family. My brothers have yelled at me. My son screamed at me. Friends say, “Think positively; pray more; read your Bible; get more exercise; keep busy”, etc.

Do they think I really want to be like this? I used to be an outgoing, gregarious person; always on the go. After I took high dose prednisone for a sudden hearing loss, my life dramatically changed.

No one believed me that steroids caused my depression. There are now actual studies proving, that high dose prednisone, should be used very cautiously in menopausal women.

My everyday life is fairly ordinary. I work as a temporary lecturer and am also a freelance trainer, teaching a variety of subjects to adults in college and at business premises.  I have been doing this for less than a year, and it is quite fun in contrast to the heavy workload I had previously as a college manager.   I travel to and from work on the London Underground and packed buses, and in previous roles I spent most of my week travelling to and fro across London on visits to businesses, taking speeding lifts to offices in buildings I had never visited before.

I was in my early 20’s when I started getting anxiety, although I had some issues as a kid. At the age of 3 I had alopecia, I wouldn’t sleep, and drove my parents round the bend, I was put on barbiturates, I also had an imaginary friend, and wet the bed. I always felt like I had to protect my parents from certain things, that happened in my life, even when I was wee. I was always scared of being abandoned too, I hated when they went out, I wouldn’t sleep till they came home.

Mary’s Story
I was born in 1937. My mother had extreme post-natal depression and was sent to a mental health hospital, which many people considered shameful in those days. Until I was 11, I was brought up by my grandmother and aunt and was just told that my mother had been ill. I had an older brother who lived with my father (grandmother’s son) and mother. My father often came to see me and gave me much love, as did my grandmother and aunt.

For some reason, unknown to me, I think the toilet is going to get me, or the pipes will burst, or that it will flush whilst I’m using it. I have lived with my anxiety disorder for most of my life, but it really started at aged 15, when I was so acutely anxious I had to take six weeks off school during my GCSE year. I was suffering from an agitated depression, an episode that left me reeling. I was so young and so unwell. It was partly triggered by stressful life events but what I didn’t know at that time was that my anxiety and depression was part of a wider illness- bipolar disorder.
