I fought this condition for years. Being raised in a dysfunctional abusive alcoholic home life as a youth there was never a thought of suicide, although depression was lingering.

I married, and had 3 amazing sons. I then learned what postpartum depression was and how low thyroid affects the brain chemicals.

My sister had attempted suicide in her teen years, a family member killed himself, another family member drank alcohol herself to death, and then our oldest son had a class member die by suicide.I have learned that I need to take depression seriously and not be afraid to share what I experience with it.

My everyday life is fairly ordinary. I work as a temporary lecturer and am also a freelance trainer, teaching a variety of subjects to adults in college and at business premises.  I have been doing this for less than a year, and it is quite fun in contrast to the heavy workload I had previously as a college manager.   I travel to and from work on the London Underground and packed buses, and in previous roles I spent most of my week travelling to and fro across London on visits to businesses, taking speeding lifts to offices in buildings I had never visited before.

I was in my early 20’s when I started getting anxiety, although I had some issues as a kid. At the age of 3 I had alopecia, I wouldn’t sleep, and drove my parents round the bend, I was put on barbiturates, I also had an imaginary friend, and wet the bed. I always felt like I had to protect my parents from certain things, that happened in my life, even when I was wee. I was always scared of being abandoned too, I hated when they went out, I wouldn’t sleep till they came home.

Mary’s Story
I was born in 1937. My mother had extreme post-natal depression and was sent to a mental health hospital, which many people considered shameful in those days. Until I was 11, I was brought up by my grandmother and aunt and was just told that my mother had been ill. I had an older brother who lived with my father (grandmother’s son) and mother. My father often came to see me and gave me much love, as did my grandmother and aunt.

I’m Karen and I have a phobia of toilets. There, I said it, I’m out. For some reason, unknown to me, I think the toilet is going to get me, or the pipes will burst, or that it will flush whilst I’m using it.
