ADHD. Research does tell us that ADHD is a condition that’s largely genetic and inherited, and that it causes specific areas of the brain to be underdeveloped or otherwise impacted.

Because trauma affects those same areas of the brain, it exacerbates ADHD symptoms. The science, however, is still out on what actually causes ADHD.Often the first point of contact, a pediatrician will use screening tools (like the Vanderbilt assessment) and other diagnostic materials that ask about the core symptoms of ADHD.

An astute clinician, however, will do more than just administer a screener to determine whether a child has ADHD — or something else that mimics or looks like ADHD.

About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. I was hopeful, prepared for battle and so well-supported. Truly, I handled that surgery about as well as possible. I don’t think I cried more than once. November 13, 2020Brain tolerance to repetitive subconcussive head impacts may be diminished by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD), according to a study of soccer players recently published in the Journal of Attention Disorders.1 In high school and college athletes, ADHD increases the risk for concussion, “accompanied by amplified concussion symptoms, prolonged recovery, and impaired performance on working memory tasks.”2 The majority of college athletes with ADHD participate in contact sports, where they can “sustain several hundred to a thousand subconcussive head impacts per season.”3 Subconcussive head impacts are defined as hits to the head that don’t result in overt concussion symptoms.Researchers conducted a
