When I Realized the True Meaning of the R-Word and the Weight It Carried
I grew up in the 80s and 90s where using derogatory slang words was somehow acceptable. The R-word along with other inappropriate terms came out of my mouth often. I am not proud to have to admit this, however, I can very confidently say that as I have grown so has my mind, my vocabulary and my empathy towards people and their feelings. All too often I hear people say, words are just words. Yes, but they also carry weight, the amount of weight they carry depends on who you are and/or the challenges you have had to face.

My Journey to Be Proud of Living With Learning Disabilities
Disability pride is a relatively new concept for me. For so many years I hated my disability and would try to hide my disability. I thought the worst thing would be if someone found out I had a learning disability. I never thought any good could come out of having a disability.

When I Stood Firm Against Prejudice Towards My Unborn Baby With Down Syndrome
The end of July is a tricky time for us. It’s impossible to avoid reflecting on the events that led to my daughter’s birth three years ago. I wish I could say I have nothing but happy memories, that I had the wonderful birth, congratulations and was surrounded by joy. That’s what I deserved. That’s what Betsy deserved. Unfortunately, the whole experience was overshadowed and tainted by NHS staff who displayed the most vile prejudice and bias towards my baby.

Happiness May Lead to Fewer Sick Days
Psychological Science.“Though prior studies have shown that happier people tend to have better cardiovascular health and immune-system responses than their less happy counterparts, our research is one of the first randomized controlled trials to suggest that increasing the psychological well-being even of generally healthy adults can have benefits to their physical health,” said Dr. Kostadin Kushlev, a professor in Georgetown University’s Department of Psychology and one of the authors of the paper. The findings show that both online and in-person psychological interventions — tactics specifically designed to boost subjective well-being — have positive effects on self-reported physical health.

Why Disability Pride Month Matters So Much This Year
July is Disability Pride Month, which many people may not know because it’s vastly underrecognized. And this year especially, it may feel difficult or inappropriate to celebrate disability pride after Pride Month, in the midst of a movement against police brutality and at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why the Future of the ADA Should Include More Support for People With Developmental Disabilities
Thirty years ago, the United States passed a bill known as the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990. The purpose of this law was to prevent discrimination against those with disabilities, such as medical, physical, mental, and developmental disabilities. Under this act, such individuals are protected from discrimination with regards to employment, public transportation, housing, healthcare, and voting.

What the History of the ADA Can Teach Us About Where We Need to Go
The institutionalization, marginalization, and oppression of individuals with mental and physical disabilities are as old as recorded history. The fear, shame, and lack of understanding that have accompanied many disabilities have led to the killing, isolation and mistreatment of disabled people in many, if not most, societies.

15 Reasons Why You Need to Watch 'The Peanut Butter Falcon'
A couple weeks ago my family and I rented the movie, “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” starring Zach Gottsagen (Zak), Dakota Johnson (Eleanor), and Shia LeBeouf (Tyler). We sat down to watch this movie like we do any other during “movie night” — calm, collected, interested and comfortable. We ended the movie covered in tears, tissues, and snot, wondering why we didn’t yet own the movie. It’s that good. No, scratch that. It’s that amazing

7 Silver Linings to the Restricted Life of Chronic Illness
Chronic illness is a terrible thing that can destroy lives, and relationships and careers. As next year will be my 10th year of living with it, however, I have discovered that there are some compensations to the restricted life to which one becomes accustomed. Some of these are serious, some not so much. A sense of humor is one of the things that keeps you going!

MASK WEARING AND ANXIETY
Covering our faces is a new experience for most of us, and if it is triggering anxiety for you, remember you are not alone! With new laws now in place recommending everyone throughout the United Kingdom to cover their mouth and nose with some kind of face covering in public spaces where social distancing is not always possible, many are experiencing an increase in their anxiety. Some people are finding that wearing a face covering can trigger panic attacks due to the feeling that their breathing is limited because of restricted airflow which can easily be compared to a sense of suffocation.

My Name is My Identity: Why Having a Ghanaian Name Means So Much to Me
To commemorate the 400 years since enslaved African people departed from West African shores and landed in the United States, Ghana declared 2019 the “Year of Return.” Hundreds of thousands of people from the African diaspora around the world went to Ghana to rebuild a lost past and connect with their roots and ancestry. I heard countless stories of people adopting new Ghanaian names that connected them to their unknown history.

Resilience Comes with Side Effects, Too
By the end of my 20s having come to a place where I can thank the Universe for the past eight years but pray to skip any such déjà vu in the future, I’m aware that the resilience I developed came with a price. Or, more precisely, with a bunch of side-effects.Today, I have several options: to brush off the side-effects and imagine they don’t exist; to think of the side effects as ‘side-virtues’ stemming from the original virtue — resilience (nothing bad can stem from a good tree, right?); or honestly confront these pitfalls and stop them from distorting my future. To discover myself better, I can only go with the latter.

In my experience, having a panic attack is objectively one of most terrifying and draining things that can happen to a person’s mind and body. I am unable to communicate while I’m actively having a panic attack, and the last thing I want is to create more chaos by inadvertently panicking someone else. I want to prepare my friends and family for what to do in case I’m having a panic attack and can’t explain what I need. The 4 Things I Wish I Could Tell You About Trauma Recovery
A long time ago, my voice was silenced. Rather than learning how to express myself with spoken words, I hid inside a shell of perfection and took to writing instead. Being perfect was my protection. If I was the model child and the ideal teen, I thought I could bring peace to my family. No one would yell or hurt me if only I shined bright enough to give them hope, or so I thought. Slowly I became mute to my own thoughts and feelings as I pushed it all down in order to give them the answer they wanted to hear, the answer I thought would keep me safe. But now I find myself wading through the torment of a traumatic past and the words I want to say can’t find their ways past my lips.

Humans are Optimistic For Much of Their Lives
