I woke up this morning only to wish that I didn’t. Every day, when I first open my eyes, I forget. I forget the pain. I forget the monotony. I forget the amount of effort it takes for me to function. I forget I’m chronically ill. In those first few seconds of the day, I feel light. I feel whole. I feel free. And then, all at once, the heaviness pushes down on my chest. Nothingness becomes everything. Now, I lie in bed dreading the day. I lie there debilitated by anxiety, depression, and discomfort. The thought of rising even to get dressed is too intimidating. Only five minutes have passed and every ounce of energy I have is already depleting.

Valentine’s Day is a timely opportunity to practice gratitude, contemplate our most important relationships with others, and spend quality time with those we love. I’m sure, by now, most of you have heard of ACEs, otherwise known as adverse childhood experiences. To us, with our 2022 sensibilities, this seems obvious. But into the mid-1980s, the connection between emotional experiences and health was seen as unscientific. It was downright pseudoscience. This means there were so many generations before our own that believed their emotional experiences had no impact on their health. That makes all the holiday arguments make a little more sense, right? However, now we have an almost universal understanding that our experiences can shape our emotions which can create real change in our biology. And that experiencing adversity at any point in life, particularly in childhood, can impact health outcomes long-term.

About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. The moment I realized I was pregnant, I tried to dial my emotions down.
