This July marks the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990. For the first time, Americans with disabilities were going to have equal opportunity and access like those without — or that’s what was supposed to happen.

There is still a lot of progress to be made 30 years later. All these years later, I’m finally hearing about Disability Pride Month.

I’ve lived with cerebral palsy for 27 years, and not once have I been aware of it. I didn’t even know what disability pride even was.

I am embarrassed to say that until this year I didn’t know there was a dedicated month for disability pride. But I do now and I will forever celebrate it. If you don’t know, Disability Pride Month was first observed in 1990 and has recently become celebrated with parades and festivals around the country. The purpose of Disability Pride Month is to honor everyone’s differences and uniqueness by raising awareness and breaking stigmas, and make people with disabilities visible in all communities. Needless to say, this is something we need as a community.

July is Disability Pride Month. I’ve been back and forth on wanting to write anything. I have never seen my disability as something that makes me consistently and physically proud. At least the act of showing it. Since my identity has been visible my entire life, being proud of constantly overcoming has often been viewed by society as less than, or even inspiration porn. These ideas have left me with negative and exhausting perceptions of myself and sometimes questioning the trustworthiness of people loving all that I am.

What Compromised Immunity Really Means During COVID-19
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve heard talk about people with weakened immune systems. “Compromised immunity” is thrown out as a quick label without any details. Some say the ones dying of COVID-19 were “sick anyway,” or “already in a nursing home.” While that may be true, I cannot separate myself from the emotion of what it means to me. That was my dad. If he were alive now, he would be lumped into that group. The facts may imply that many of us are safe, but people at higher risk deserve better than to be brushed off as a non-issue.
