What It's Like Being Young With Crohn's Disease
About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. I was hopeful, prepared for battle and so well-supported. Truly, I handled that surgery about as well as possible. I don’t think I cried more than once. My main role, in fact, felt like making sure everyone around me was comfortable with the idea of this surgery. Even as a young kid, I was always complimented on “how well you handle your illness!” and “ You seem so on top of things!” After all, I am a senior college student with 323,987 things to do, a color-coded planner, huge dreams, and a go-getter attitude to take on the world. Most would think I do indeed have my life together. Well, guess what? Sometimes having it all together is overrated. Sometimes neglecting your emotions for the comfort of others isn’t the right thing to do. Sometimes you need to feel without apology.

September 24, 2020Hospitalized adolescent girls with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) are more likely to experience non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)1 than are boys with ADHD, according to a study recently presented at the virtual congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. This study, which found NSSI correlated most strongly with ADHD comorbidities like affective and psychotic disorders, follows an ongoing body of research analyzing the link between ADHD in girls and an elevated risk for self-injury.2Findings came from a cross-sectional study of 202 adolescent inpatients (51% female) at the Vadaskert Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital in Budapest.

Recently, a Facebook friend posted in one the many borderline personality disorder groups I belong to that his psychologist told him that he no longer meets criteria for BPD. On a different BPD page someone asked the question if anyone had ever been told they no longer have BPD.  I lost count of the number of people who say they had. There were even mentions of being cured like a person is cured from a disease, or receiving an “undiagnosis” (usually by a psychologist, interestingly). And confusingly there seemed to be different definitions of recovery and remission.

September 22, 2020Black Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) than the general population, according to findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Psychiatry.1 These findings seem to contradict the DSM-5, which suggests that the prevalence of ADHD is relatively lower among Black individuals. The new meta-analysis did not determine whether the higher diagnosis rate is due to elevated risk factors for Black Americans, culturally insensitive evaluation tools, racial bias, other factors, or some combination therein.Black individuals living in countries where they are considered a minority are underrepresented in studies evaluating ADHD.

September 21, 2020Perceived benefit plays a significant role in explaining why adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) experience increased engagement in risky behavior (ERB), according to a new study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders.1 Specifically, adults with ADHD are more likely to over-estimate benefits when weighing a decision, leading them to relatively riskier behaviors, the research suggests.For the study, 97 adults with ADHD, ages 20-40, were administered two questionnaires designed to compare different ways of conceptualizing decision-making under risk. The Adult Risk-Taking Inventory (ARTI) — comprising 40 descriptions of risky behavior — was administered first.
