It’s a tough question to answer because the thing is that no two days are the same with ADHD. The only consistent thing about ADHD is its inconsistency.

And it’s not just that some days are “good” and some days are “bad,” but rather that there are different characteristics of harder or easier days that make them different.

Like most of the other kids I knew, I was baptized, attended Catholic school from K-12, and celebrated my First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Confession. I read the Bible, completed the mandatory Religious Studies in each grade, and memorized the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary. In my child’s mind, God was a mysterious and powerful figure who watched over me (which was simultaneously comforting and frightening), Heaven was an ethereal idea of the wonderful place waiting for me when I die, and Hell was the terrifying end I would experience if I had been a bad person.

Many of us can conceptualize and recognize a caterpillar and a butterfly, but the physical and chemical changes that occur while the caterpillar is in this suspended, stationary state are far less glamorous and identifiable. The tissues of the caterpillar are dissolved, digested, metabolized, absorbed, and rearranged into the new form of a butterfly. You cannot rush this process or force an early emergence, for if you do, the organism will not be able to survive. The work continues once the metamorphosis is complete and the butterfly emerges; the butterfly has to pump fluid through its body to inflate its wings before taking flight. I welcome you inside my dark, chaotic chrysalis. I do not know what I will look like or feel like or where I will be able to go once I emerge, but I know I’m living in a time of transformation.

April 15, 2022Some individuals diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may experience maladaptive daydreaming (MD), however, the two conditions are distinct and different, according to a new study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology that shows “that most adults with MD will meet the criteria for ADHD but that their attention deficit is secondary to their core problem of becoming addicted to their immersive, fanciful daydreaming.” 1 The researchers suggested that MD may be a more appropriate diagnosis for some individuals than is ADHD, though the former is not yet a formal psychiatric diagnosis.People who present with MD deliberately slip into highly detailed and realistic daydreams that can last hours and interfere with their ability to function in the real world. ADHD, particularly the inattentive subtype, may cause an individual to lose focus and daydream but this behavior is neurological, not intentional.
