Everyone encounters stress in their lives. Some might have to battle stress on a daily basis and others once in a while. When it comes to single parents of children with disabilities, the stress and struggle can overshadow our every move.

My son can be described using a lot of words such as adorable, awesome, autistic, and amusing, but athletic is not one of them. He is the type of kid who can trip while sitting, bump into things a room away, and run into a tree while focusing on a bird. For these reasons, I’ve felt so lucky to live in a town that has baseball, soccer, and basketball leagues for kids with disabilities. These leagues help the kids learn the basic skills of the sport while creating friendships and camaraderie. These leagues are my comfort zone; my kid is out on the field with kids of similar abilities, I am in the stands with parents who share the trials and triumphs of parenting a child with a disability. During these practices, I can sit back and chat, or chase my other kids with full confidence that the coaches and volunteers know how to best help my kid and that there is no judgment from teammates or other parents.

Society has taught us that feeling suicidal is irrational, frantic, urgent, scary. Sometimes it is all of those things, but often it’s fleeting thoughts, feelings of wanting to “disappear,” or having no feelings at all. It can be slow and passive and not look like wanting to hurt yourself or making a plan to. When I first had thoughts about finding it too hard to live with my chronic illnesses, I think I scared myself. I felt deeply guilty and people’s minimizations of my illnesses popped into my head.

There is a lot of messaging that now is the perfect time to try a new hobby or catch up on those home improvement tasks you have on your to-do list and that somehow it is possible to “make good use” of our time during COVID lockdowns. That is not at all the case. We are not on vacation. From a psychological perspective, it’s more like the London Blitz. We are all under a tremendous amount of threat from a source we can’t control and can’t predict. That threat might be concern about our own health, the health of friends or loved ones, financial implications of lockdowns, or just the stress of living in lockdown with partners and kids constantly underfoot.

As I write this blog, this world is faced with a global pandemic. When I wrote my last blog at the end of 2019, I hardly imagined that my next blog would start with this line. But here we are. It’s an unsettling and unprecedented time that forces many of us into a life that feels much slower, but also more isolated and uncertain. Things and activities that we perceived as completely normal and often took for granted, such as talking to colleagues at work, meeting up with friends, going to a restaurant, watching a film in the cinema, visiting family or even hugging loved ones, suddenly seem like an expensive luxury item we can no longer afford.
