The Surprisingly Tough Part About My Life With Chronic Pain

Every day to some degree I want to yell out, but instead under my breath I say: “Son of a B#$*&” “I F*#&ing can’t do this” “Dammit, that hurt like Sh#&” “What the H#&&” “What a total waste, Today S*&#$” All because of chronic pain.

It’s like “Pain” is a four letter word. So much so that it is taboo for the haughty, and an expletive for the afflicted. Obviously, I am in the latter group.

Probably because I have lived with chronic pain most of my life. The tough part about constantly enduring some level of pain isn’t really about the physical hurting; it’s about the disregard and invalidation.

What I Want Others to Know About Life with HS
Usually when I share that I have a chronic illness, someone will ask what it is. I’m very open about my hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), but I still struggle with how to answer this question. I’ll first say it’s HS, then I’ll follow up with a joke about how it’s a mouthful. I debate how to best describe what it is that I, and so many others, live with. If I say it’s a skin disease, I’ll sometimes be met with a look of dismissal that suggests, That’s all? If I explain that it results in boils and lesions all over the body, there’s usually at least a quick look of disgust that passes over the person’s face. I just want to show them one of my flare-ups to help get my point across of just how painful it is.

What I Wish Others Knew About Life with UC
An average day of life with ulcerative colitis cannot be explained by all of the Oxford English Dictionary words, or squished between cascading columns of commas on a blank page. Each day is like an unopened fortune cookie with a paper-thin prophecy crammed safely inside the shell, just waiting to be unlocked. Poetry aside, the future is not as permanent or material as a lukewarm fortune cookie waiting on top of the receipt at the end of a hot meal.
