Carefully selected coping mechanisms can often be the only thing that helps you get through the day when you’re living with mental illness.
The methods used vary widely, from person to person and from disorder to disorder, but the intent is the same. An effective coping mechanism should keep you elevated above, but maybe not out of, the quagmire of emotions or thoughts that threaten to pull you down.
