I've always striven to be special. After all, as a child, I got praise whenever I did something that was above average. Throughout my life, to keep me motivated, I fancied myself superior, ignoring the many messages that I was pretty much average: B+ grades in school, a piano player just good enough for bar and bar mitzvahs, a career counselor with results not better than many colleagues'.
I’ve tried to understand literature such as Shakespeare but even when I read the Cliff's Notes before going to see a Shakespeare play, much goes over my head.
I also tried to suppress that, in some areas, I am below average, notably my looks, tact, and equanimity—Despite telling myself to slow down, I’m often too quick to be blunt, even angry.
