The Wonders of Self-Compassion Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic
Self-compassion is a powerful yet often under-used and under-appreciated tool. With the COVID-19 pandemic going on, we need to take the time to care for our emotional wellbeing. Doing this can even enable us to help others better. Self-compassion can motivate us internally and allow us to show compassion to others externally.

When Your Disability Means You Can't Stay Six Feet From Others
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the entire world in different ways. Economies have ground to a halt. State and nationwide lockdowns have been issued. Many hospitals are at capacity and they do not have enough staff, personal protective equipment, nor ventilators/respirators that are required to save those infected with the virus. The CDC has suggested simply staying home or remaining at least six feet apart when interacting with others, also known as social distancing. This suggestion might seem easy to follow, but for people like me, practicing social distancing is not possible.

Overcoming the Challenges of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). I heard these words for the first time over 30 years ago, when I was diagnosed at age 16. One would think I would be devastated, but I was actually a bit relieved! At least my diagnosis gave me an explanation for why it was so difficult for me to make the throw from third base to first while playing Babe Ruth League baseball in Quincy, Massachusetts. The diagnosis justified the struggles I had building muscle while I was competing on the Boston College High School wrestling team. I finally understood why I had trouble smiling, which caused many people to ask me if I was “unhappy” or tell me I was “too serious.”

It Takes a Village (and a Plan) to Stay the ADHD Treatment Course
Medications for ADHD are among the safest and most effective treatments in medicine. So why do so many people stop taking them, and what can be done to prevent this? Little research has been done on why people do not stick with ADHD treatments. The research we do have, however, is consistent: The most effective thing we can do is check in with clinicians more often — in person or via a telemedicine appointment. Though expensive and time-consuming, this solution is the best insurance that your investment in getting a diagnosis and effective treatment will pay off.

Relationship Turmoil or The Saving Grace of COVID-19
March 19th marked the first orders in the United States, to shelter in place. Implemented in California, and later in most states, this mandate has marked the beginning of an incredibly traumatic 6-week spiral for many. But let’s talk about why. For those with anxiety, the tolls associated with the corona virus have hit hard because anxiety has historically revolved around three critical elements finances, health and safety. As the news reports daily, the financial picture for many is bleak.

Creole Son: An Adoptive Mother Untangles Nature and Nurture
My book, Creole Son: An Adoptive Mother Untangles Nature and Nurture, has just been published by Louisiana State University Press. The book includes an introduction by award winning writer, Andrew Solomon and a positive afterword by my adult son. Creole Son is a memoir combined with social and scientific analysis written for a general audience. It revolves around my son's reunion with his Creole and Cajun birth parents in Louisiana and his several long stays with them. The book contains an appendix on "Implications for Adoption Theory, Practice and Research."
