July 11, 2022Alzheimer’s symptoms like slow cognition and apathy may improve in Alzheimer’s syndrome patients treated with ADHD medication, which has little effect on attention or episodic memory, according to a new study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.1The research, which comprised a meta-analysis of eight clinical trials involving 425 patients, found that ADHD medication had a significant positive effect on apathy, a common Alzheimer’s symptom. (The noradrenergic system influences motivation.)2Findings from 10 studies involving 1,300 patients revealed a small positive effect of noradrenergic drugs on overall cognition, as measured by the Mini-Mental State Exam or the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale.1 However, the study reports that noradrenergic drugs do not significantly affect attention or episodic memory in patients with Alzheimer’s.

July 11, 2022Behavioral interventions like healthy sleep hygiene, calming visualization, and reliable sleep and wake times are effective at improving ADHD-related sleep issues in children, according to a meta-analysis published in the Journal of Attention Disorders1. Though the study does not recommend specific interventions, its findings are a promising addition to a growing body of research surrounding behavioral interventions for correcting sleep difficulties.The researchers’ analyses, which considered 11 studies, focused on children between the ages of 5 and 15 diagnosed with ADHD who had at least one sleep problem and received some form of behavioral sleep intervention. Interventions included educating parents on sleep hygiene, establishing a proper sleep environment, and setting proper wake and sleep time, as well as using positive reinforcement, bedtime fading, and calming visualization for the children involved in the study.Though researchers found that individualized interventions that targeted the child’s specific sleep difficulty proved more effective and time-efficient than did standardized approaches.

Walking into my therapist’s office the day I decided I needed to go back into residential treatment was not easy. When you write in your journal, you get the chance to get stuff off your chest. If you’re stressed, write out why you’re feeling this way or who is stressing you out. Even though writing in a journal won’t change your circumstances, it helps you feel emotionally lighter and less burdened.

I’m on day seven of isolation due to COVID and I must admit that I’m starting to get some serious. cabin fever. I managed to avoid getting COVID for two and a half years. Myself, my friend, and her husband all came away from that event with COVID.

“Ooh! Your cane is so pretty and shiny!”  How I wish I could see the beauty in the golden cane I have been using. I wish I could see how the sunlight shines off of it. Instead, I see a plain old boring cane that someone older than me should be using.

Social stuff and sensory stuff might seem like two unrelated topics, but in my experience, they’re more closely linked than they’re usually given credit for.

They say you’re not supposed to personalize physical pain, especially when it’s chronic. You shouldn’t refer to it as “my pain,” instead “the pain.” You can also give the pain a name. That way when it lingers like the last guest at a party you are able to remember the pain is in fact a guest, a guest that notoriously overstays their welcome.  I haven’t given the pain a fun name yet, primarily because I believe I’m fine. I don’t consider the pain or my experience with illness unique. Some bodies function properly with little to no intervention, and other bodies require extra attention. I am the latter.
