March 11, 2022Two years ago today, the World Health Organization formally characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic. Inside a week, workplaces, schools, places of worship, and most unessential stores had shuttered; we were all thrown into psychological vertigo.

A new diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis can be overwhelming, even terrifying. I remember when my doctor told me the news. Our first meeting was a blur. We’ll try this, test for that. I remember thinking I would do anything she said – I just wanted to make the pain and swelling stop. I felt like I was constantly reacting to a continuous barrage of changes. Since I had no one to guide me through navigating my disease, I had to learn how to advocate for myself.

I am a person with a disability (I have cerebral palsy, am an amputee, a wheelchair user and I also have an intellectual disability). I am 32 years old and have accomplished many things in my life, personally and career-wise. Whether it be the philanthropic work I have done throughout my life or changing careers in my late 20s to become a writer, one thing has always remained true — my mom has always been very overprotective of me. I get that honestly, I do. A parent will always see their children as their babies, no matter how old they are, disabled or not. I have faced infantilization for years by my mom and other family members because of my disabilities.

Burnout has become a recurring character in my life. Some may say it’s because I still need to work on healthy coping mechanisms and recognizing when I need to slow down, which would be entirely true, but I like to tell myself it’s because I feel good about myself when I feel like I’m being productive or hardworking. Yes, say researchers who used data from the brain scans of 92 people to successfully measure and predict how well they would perform on tasks that required sustained focus and attention. The Yale study, published in March in Nature Human Behavior, may have implications for diagnosing ADHD, for predicting its severity, and for improving focus.1Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brains of study participants as they performed exercises that required attention, and then linked that information to patterns of activity across different brain regions. Researchers then created a computational model that was so sensitive, it was able to predict how an individual would perform on an attention-related task, even when the brain was resting.“We can take all those complex patterns and analyze the data to create a fingerprint of the brain’s ability to pay attention,” said researcher Marvin Chun, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Yale.
