My Mental Illness Is Not a Fashion Statement
Over the past 20 years, the discussion around mental health has become more socially acceptable, which is an absolutely wonderful, glorious thing. Rather than people hiding their pain behind “I’m fine,” many people are seeking the help they actually need. As someone who has lived with an anxiety disorder for most of my life, I am grateful to live in such an age where I can seek therapy, take my meds and work towards healing without being shamed. Yet, I can’t help but wonder: has the matter of mental health swung too far to the other end of the pendulum in our search for de-stigmatization?

How the Romanticization of Schizophrenia Tainted My Art Project
Have you ever felt like a fraud? All throughout my work with my art project, Curious Markings, I’ve felt like a big ‘ol snake oil salesman. I felt this way because I listened to other peoples’ opinions about what they think it is or what it should be rather than taking some sorely needed time to ask myself what Curious Markings is for me, what it should be to me.

The progress of technology has changed the face of the world in every way, especially with learning. The traditional education methods involved tiring efforts and demanded that students immerse themselves in notes and lectures. It happened more often than not that students were unable to understand and learn anything new because of the usual teaching techniques. Instead, they were puzzled after mugging down intricate details and completing tedious assignments. However, eLearning came through for individuals with its unlimited resources and added perks and advantages that made life easier for students.

When You Were Taught to Believe It Isn't Safe to Have Feelings
Growing up in my abusive and dysfunction family, I wasn’t allowed feelings. My feelings were wrong and punished. I displayed them at the wrong time or wrong place. I was being dramatic. Could I get any more embarrassing?! People might see me. What would they think? Not just of me but of my parents. I was shaming my parents. What on earth would people think of them? Their daughter was out of control, outrageous! She had feelings! Oh the shame!

If You Have “Crippling Anxiety,” You May Have An Anxiety Disorder
I’ve had anxiety since I was a small child. It was manageable until I was 16 years old, when my anxiety became crippling — i.e., way too much for me to handle. I began to have daily panic attacks and developed a phobia of using public transportation. I was scared to take trains and airplanes. Even taking the school bus began to scare me and I’d find ways to avoid going to school. I was eventually diagnosed with panic disorder.

Coping With Serious Mental Illness During Challenging Times
The outbreak of coronavirus has rocked my world, causing stress or worry beyond what I might normally experience with my severe mental health diagnosis. With my mental illness, I already practice some degree of self-isolation. For me, a hidden benefit of the social distancing we are now required to practice is I don’t have to change my routine drastically because of this new normal for everyone else. I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2004 and currently live with schizoaffective disorder. As a way of coping with my day-to-day symptoms, I have worked hard to establish a daily routine that gives me purpose.

The Day We Decided Not to Grow Our Family
I’m lucky. I’m a stay-at-home mom with a wonderful and loving family. I have a great husband and a smart, beautiful little girl. I’m lucky because I conceived naturally within five months of trying, and carried a baby to full-term. My daughter was in the NICU for 18 hours and I couldn’t see her. It tore me apart. It pales in comparison to the women who have to wait weeks or months just to bring their babies home. I’m lucky, and I know that.

It’s Time to Wait and See What New Self Will Emerge from the Stillness of This Chaos
If you’re like most people, you may be experiencing an overwhelming sense of being trapped in a situation where you feel powerless. You listen to the news, and the more information you receive, the more powerless you feel. Because the truth is, everyone is in a wait and see situation. Yes, we are going to be smart and responsible; we’re going to wash our hands frequently, keep our hands out of our faces, practice social distancing, and stay at home as much as possible. Still, we will be forced to wait and see. Today, I was notified that a dear friend lost a family member to coronavirus complications. I feel sad, and I can’t help but ask the questions. WHY? And Marvin Gaye’s proverbial, “What’s going on?”

What to Do If You Can't Wear a Face Mask
Despite mixed advice early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks have emerged as one of the most important tools we have to prevent COVID-19. When worn properly, studies suggest face masks can significantly slow the spread of the virus in communities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has since updated its guidance to recommend everyone wear a face mask while out in public. Some cities and states now require masks.
