I meant to publish this post last week, on Father’s Day. Didn’t get around to it, though. Mostly because I didn’t want to let sad thoughts permeate a day of celebration.

Over the past year our family has faced many challenges. My husband, Nilo, was diagnosed with #livercancer back in June 2019 and due to complications from an emergency surgery, he lives with an ileostomy and parenteral/intravenous nutrition.

All this while undergoing oncological treatment. We do our best to navigate these challenges and enjoy the good days. Mostly, we try to keep a positive atmosphere at home since our 34-year-old son, Alberto, with #intellectualdisability, “feeds” on our state of mind.

What happened: The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) released startling new statistics that demonstrate gross disparities when it comes to COVID-19 case reporting for residents of psychiatric treatment facilities and facilities for people with developmental disabilities. According to the ACLU, only eight states plus the District of Columbia are reporting both cases and deaths at psychiatric treatment facilities, and only 10 at institutions for people with developmental disabilities. What happened: U.S. District Judge Anne Conway sided with Disney World over a disabled adult whose mother was seeking remedy under the Americans With Disabilities Act. Donna Lorman, president of the Autism Society of Greater Orlando, filed a lawsuit on behalf of her autistic son in 2013 when the amusement park changed its policy on disabled guests.
