Last night, at my niece’s 2nd birthday party, I started sobbing uncontrollably. For no apparent reason. I was so embarrassed.

I tried to hide my tears, but I could not stop them. I had no idea why they were falling. I was an absolute mess. My poor husband was so confused.

I bawled for hours. After I stopped crying, my tears turned to rage. So I went outside and tried to stomp off some of my anger.

About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. Sometimes neglecting your emotions for the comfort of others isn’t the right thing to do. Sometimes you need to feel without apology.

Just over 10 years ago, I developed Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE), and was in a coma for six weeks and hospitalized for 18 months.
