Pat Quinn has died at the age of 37 on Sunday, according to the ALS Foundation, following a seven-year journey with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive condition that leads to a loss of neurons that control muscles. Quinn and Pete Frates, another person who lived with ALS, created the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2015 to raise awareness about the condition and funding for research.

People who were nominated for the Ice Bucket Challenge had the option to dump a bucket of cold water on themselves, mimicking some ALS symptoms, or donate to help ALS research.
