Bloody fingers. Band-Aids. Painful skin. Disappointment. Anxiety. “Just stop picking.” These are just a few of the things I’ve dealt with over the many years of living with dermatillomania.
It is, sadly, a very misunderstood disorder and one that is rarely talked about outside of those who struggle with it. Dermatillomania has been a part of my life for a long time.
I believe it started as a way to cope with trauma. Unfortunately, it also comes with a lot of shame, especially if someone points out places you’ve picked your skin, so it can be really hard to talk about.
