After attempting suicide when I was 15, I was sent to a mental hospital. The minimum stay in places like this is 72 hours, but I was at such a high risk of relapsing, they kept me for a month.

Despite what many people might think, I had a blast. There’s never a dull moment in a mental hospital, and it’s filled with lots of interesting and amazing characters.

I finally found a place where people had the same kinds of mental health problems I did. Most importantly, I‘d never met suicidal people before, so I fit in like dogs meeting at a park.

About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. I was hopeful, prepared for battle and so well-supported. Truly, I handled that surgery about as well as possible. I don’t think I cried more than once. My main role, in fact, felt like making sure everyone around me was comfortable with the idea of this surgery. Even as a young kid, I was always complimented on “how well you handle your illness!” and “ You seem so on top of things!” After all, I am a senior college student with 323,987 things to do, a color-coded planner, huge dreams, and a go-getter attitude to take on the world. Most would think I do indeed have my life together. Well, guess what? Sometimes having it all together is overrated. Sometimes neglecting your emotions for the comfort of others isn’t the right thing to do. Sometimes you need to feel without apology.

January 27, 2020Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum depression, and climacteric mood symptoms disproportionately impact women with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD), according to a new study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.1 The study found that women with ADHD more commonly experience symptoms of hormone-related mood disorders, and those symptoms may be more severe than those experienced by women without ADHD.Study participants included 209 adult female patients with ADHD (ages 18-71) from an outpatient ADHD clinic in The Hague, Netherlands. Seventy of the participants had irregular menstrual cycles; 35 were peri-or-postmenopausal; and 174 were of reproductive age.
