I’ve never known life without the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). I was born with cerebral palsy five years after the ADA was passed, and to say I took the Act for granted is a massive understatement.

It wasn’t until I started searching for jobs post-college that I realized just how many rights the ADA affords me — and the extent to which the Act can be violated.

I had long heard stories of people with cerebral palsy applying to job after job without so much as an interview, but I confidently pushed those doubts to the back of my mind as I began my own job search.

A common misconception of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Black community is that Black women are strong enough to withstand (without support) any trauma that comes our way. We are bombarded with racist macro and micro aggressions, racial trauma, sexual violence, community violence, inadequate mental healthcare and so much more. We are told we are the “Strong Black Woman,” and we are immune to mental disorders. We are just expected to be resilient. That mental illness is a white person’s problem. That white people are weaker and therefore need outside help. This is not true. Black women need help too. We are experiencing trauma and are demonstrating signs of PTSD. My fellow sisters are suffering in silence and there seems to be no relief and support in sight.

We already had two smaller ones, but this new tank meant we could combine all of our fish back into one like we once had it. It was quite an ordeal to fully take down two tanks and set up a third, so by the time we were finished, I was feeling quite accomplished. It’s July and I’m walking through my local Target’s clothing apparel. Their Pride line is slowly moving from its featured location to being incorporated into each brand’s section. I look eagerly hoping for disability pride merchandise, a shirt, a pin, or a flag, but I find nothing. It’s not just at Target that Disability Pride month has been ignored, it’s most retail companies. I don’t see Disability Pride Month being acknowledged in commercials. I don’t see cool playlists for disabled directors or actors on subscriptions like Netflix or HBOMax. I am disappointed and confused about why disabled people are not being represented and celebrated by major companies this month.
