Where I grew up, sleep was not seen as a positive or healthy thing. It was more of an inconvenient necessity or a very convenient excuse.
Let me explain. For a “healthy” individual, the need to sleep up to eight hours a night was acceptable but unfortunate. For anyone needing more sleep, it was a sure sign of sloth, weakness and laziness.
Only small children were exempt for needing daily naps. Of course, if someone was experiencing acute illness such as the flu, daytime rest was permitted, but they had better not enjoy it or they were being lazy.
