Although being transgender isn’t a mental illness, many within our community do experience it. I am a trans man, meaning I was assigned female at birth but my gender is male.
I’ve lived with several mental illnesses for over a decade, the worst of which is known as complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD.Unlike PTSD, C-PTSD comes from prolonged and repeated traumas rather than a singular event.
When I talk about my C-PTSD and trauma, many people presume this ‘caused’ me to be trans. In fact, I think it had a near opposite effect, and caused me to think I was cisgender (not transgender) for many years.I grew up in a household of 6, with 3 brothers and heterosexual parents.
