What to Do When Treatment Teams Disagree
When you have a complex chronic illness you oftentimes have to see multiple different specialists that form what we know as a treatment team. In an ideal world these providers work together to create a treatment plan with a goal/similar goals in mind. Sometimes a treatment team is made up of only a couple different providers, while other times it is made up of multiple specialists in addition to their PAs and NPs, which are seen between appointments when more frequent follow-ups are needed.

Are High Expectations Sabotaging Your Relationships?
Is it bad to have high expectations? Not necessarily. There’s nothing wrong with having certain standards for your life and for your relationships, as long as they’re within reason. However, the “within reason” is the tricky part. The line between “high expectations” and “unrealistic expectations” can be quite blurry.

The Difference Between PTSD and C-PTSD (and Why It Matters)
I was sitting on the couch of the therapist I was seeing over 10 years ago. She had her Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) in her lap, and with my input, she was going over the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I was convinced I had it, she was not. Turns out neither of us was wrong and neither of us was right.

Don’t Be Better… Be “the Only”
I think college is a waste of time and a waste of money and a general waste of life energy.“But you went to college,” she said, “why is it good enough for you but not me?” — says everyone who asks me about this. It’s because I went to college that I am against it. Can Public Apologies Pressure People to Forgive Their Abusers?
Public apologies in the form of videos disseminated via social media, such as Justin Timberlake’s Instagram apology in February 2021, have become almost cliché. Accusations of abuse, assault or misconduct are made against a celebrity, then said celebrity posts a video apologizing for their transgressions and vowing to change their behavior. But do these virtual-mea culpas actually work to convince the victims to forgive? I don’t think so.

Fighting the 'Anxiety Monster' to Announce My Autism
I constantly go back and forth between being my true, authentic self and letting others in. I dwell on the fact that life is brief, and each exhale or inhale could be the last. Then on the other hand, I feel myself crawling towards that safe, dark closet of mine that has held the secret for 30 years. There are instances where I feel bold, I feel empowered, then I cower and fall back into the arms of the half-truth that has held me.

Moving Beyond Awareness and Acceptance to Autism Pride
Autism Awareness Month has gone through a few makeovers along the years. We autistics quickly tired of the word awareness. I think most people are aware that we exist nowadays. It also makes it feel more like a rare disease than a neurological disorder. This year, most people have gone with the term Autism Acceptance, which is a step in the right direction. It’s still not enough, though.

You Don’t Actually Owe Medical Staff Your Trauma Experience
A few years ago, I admitted myself to get some inpatient support for my mental health. If you aren’t aware, part of that process tends to involve multiple lengthy interviews, commonly undertook by several different staff of all sorts. They do what’s called a “psychosocial assessment,” which helps them understand your needs and possible diagnosis. Inevitably they get to a section of questions regarding if you have experienced abuse or trauma. That part of the interview is what I’m talking about today.

What Neurotypical People Need to Know About Autistic Meltdowns
Autistic meltdowns are one of the most difficult parts of autism for me. My meltdowns were not dealt with well in my childhood. My parents thought I was just throwing tantrums. They thought I could control what was happening, which was not the case at all. I was usually locked in my room during these meltdowns. This has added trauma beyond belief, to have been shoved into a room and have the doorknob ripped out of my hand while all I wanted was some deep pressure. I still have night terrors where I wake up screaming about being trapped. Of course, I couldn’t verbalize what was causing the meltdowns and my parents had no interest in figuring it out themselves. It was just easier to lock me away.

Why Many Autistic People Don't Celebrate Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month, but most self-advocates don’t celebrate it. If one is new to the autistic community, one might be surprised by the pushback against these “awareness” efforts. The month-long campaign has a 51-year history. It was launched in April of 1970 by the Autism Society, which was founded by parents of autistic children. Each year, the controversial organization Autism Speaks promotes the month as one of its awareness campaigns, along with April 2, which is World Autism Day. The majority of the people who celebrate Autism Awareness Month happen to be parents and family members.

4 Ways to Adopt a Winner’s Mindset
Winning isn’t easy, but do you know what’s tougher? Losing. That’s why winners adopt a winning mindset. But it takes time to do so. It also takes patience, dedication, conviction, and persistence. We all know the satisfaction that comes from setting ourselves goals and meeting them, of facing challenges and besting them, of maintaining a great level of fitness even at a time when we have all been struggling and a lot of the facilities we would usually go to have closed their doors.

I Am 18 and Chronically Ill. Yes, I Am Just as Valid.
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia just after I turned 18. I had been fighting for three years to be taken seriously, and it all came to a head in November 2020. I turned 18 and suddenly I had a diagnosis and a treatment plan. I’d been in and out of hospital and general practitioner (GP) offices. I’d had to quit school. I had been either on bed rest or basically sofa bound for the last four months, having only a few days where I could get out and about with my family and boyfriend. I was medicated for sleep, anxiety, pain and then, in late October, seizures.

Instead Of Trying To Motivate Yourself, Work On Growing Your Discipline
*waves frantically* It’s me! I have all the grace, for myself and everybody else. I don’t need the validation and pats on the back because I’ve given them all to myself, becoming even a bit too assured of how awesome I am, whether I’m checking things off my to-do list or not.In the midst of 2020, that was a good thing.

Grappling With My Schizophrenia Diagnosis
Tonight, I climbed a wall. Well, attempted to; I managed to only reach halfway up before giving up, my hands sweaty, my arms shaking, almost to the point of numbness. My partner was cheering me up, telling me that at least I conquered half of the three-story (or was it four-story?) wall. I wasn’t happy nor sad; I was calm. I even managed to assess objectively why I wasn’t able to finish, without judging myself harshly, something I strive to do every day, and more often than not, fail. At least I made it halfway, after years of not climbing walls (during school fairs only, mind you) and lack of regular physical activity.

What It's Really Like Being a Teenager With Chronic Pain
Having a chronic illness and struggling with chronic pain sucks for anyone. I am not saying it is worse when you are a teenager, this is only my experience. Adolescence is a difficult and exciting time, when young people make discoveries, decisions and plans about their futures, and develop a sense of who they are and their place in the world. But when you are a young person with chronic pain, this period can be extremely challenging.

How Forgetting to Eat Could Be a Sign of ADHD
When I tell people that I’m diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), they usually nod in understanding despite the fact that they most likely have no idea what that means. ADHD is a common disorder, yet most of the people around me still have the misconception that the diagnosis just means, “That girl can’t pay attention well.” It actually means so much more.

6 Quotes About Anxiety & What We Can Learn From Them
spotlight effect, which refers to our tendency to overestimate how much other people notice us. This belief that others are always looking at and judging us is central to many people’s social anxiety. In order to debunk this belief and better understand the spotlight effect, think about all of the people you saw this week — on the street, in the grocery store, in class.

How To Spark A Positive Mood When Feeling Dull
Tidy your surroundings and invite more calm and peace into your life. This doesn’t mean just shoving everything in sight into a cupboard and forgetting about it (if only)! It means actually dealing with things that are bogging you down—physically and mentally. For example, perhaps you have a pile of paperwork that needs addressing (accounts that need closing, bills that need to be paid, etc.), and every time you glance at this pile of paperwork, it chips away at your positive mood.

How to Let Go: 5 Steps to Move On and Feel Less Pain
“Some of us think holding on makes us strong, but sometimes it is letting go.”Herman HesseI often write about finding lightness in life.It can come from an unhurried but effective day at work or from uncluttering your home.Or from learning how to let go and move on in life.Learning to let go of a relationship, of something else in your past, of something that is just an unimportant distraction or of trying to control what you cannot control can free up huge amounts of the energy and the time you have to use for something better and more fulfilling. It is not always easy.

The Universe Hurls Forward No Matter What: When Tragedy Taught Me about Acceptance, Hope and Resilience
Tragedy convinced me that “fair and unfair” are human constructs in the eyes of the universe, a system of values created by our species to help us (hopefully) live our best lives. It is true that our beliefs are not unimportant to us humans but to the infinite universe, I realised that those constructs are as inconsequential as the concept of linear time and of day and night: gradations to help us perceive equilibrium and structure of an infinite order that we would not be able to understand otherwise. The universe continues on regardless of how fair or unfair our lives are.2020 was a hard year for many people in the world: between world catastrophes and personal tragedy, loss was everywhere.

7 Ways to Support Autistics During Autism Awareness Month
It’s Autism Awareness Month and many of us who are on the spectrum tend to dread this time of year. Our voices are often drowned out and we are gaslit by people who say they are advocates who are there to help us. Autism Awareness Month can often be very counterproductive to the autistic community. Awareness can turn into fear-mongering and scare tactics. However, there isn’t anything scary about autism.
