What It's Like Being Young With Crohn's Disease
About a year ago, I was coming out of surgery for my Crohn’s disease. At 21, I had made the difficult but necessary decision to remove my entire colon and live with a permanent ostomy. I was hopeful, prepared for battle and so well-supported. Truly, I handled that surgery about as well as possible. I don’t think I cried more than once. My main role, in fact, felt like making sure everyone around me was comfortable with the idea of this surgery. Even as a young kid, I was always complimented on “how well you handle your illness!” and “ You seem so on top of things!” After all, I am a senior college student with 323,987 things to do, a color-coded planner, huge dreams, and a go-getter attitude to take on the world. Most would think I do indeed have my life together. Well, guess what? Sometimes having it all together is overrated. Sometimes neglecting your emotions for the comfort of others isn’t the right thing to do. Sometimes you need to feel without apology.

September 9, 2021Half of young adults with ADHD struggle with substance use disorders, according to a new study published in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.1 Specifically, one-third of adults with ADHD studied had a chronic alcohol use disorder compared to 13% of adults without ADHD.Data was drawn from the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (CCHS-MH). Participants included 6,872 respondents aged 20-39, 270 of whom had ADHD.After adjusting for controls, researchers found that participants with ADHD faced higher odds of developing alcohol use disorders, cannabis use disorders, other drug use disorders, and any substance use disorder.

Study: Only 1 in 10 Children with ADHD Will Outgrow Symptoms
August 30, 2021Most children with ADHD won’t outgrow the disorder, according to a study published this month in The American Journal of Psychiatry1 that challenges the widely held notion that ADHD symptoms do not commonly persist into adulthood.Findings from the study, which followed 558 children with ADHD from the Multimodal Treatment Study of ADHD (MTA) over 16 years, show that only 9.1% of subjects “recovered” from ADHD by the study endpoint, when most participants were about 25 years old.The study also found that ADHD symptoms wax and wane over time for many individuals who continue to experience the disorder.
