If you’ve ever seen the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” it is a terrible depiction of what inpatient hospitalizations look like today with the Nurse Ratched character or the lobotomies performed on patients. On Monday, August 30, I was supposed to have two surgeries to repair two hernias in my abdomen. Within the weeks leading to the surgeries, I closed my alterations business, double-masked everywhere I went which was only on a needed basis and was extra cautious in general. Still, after having gone two years not catching COVID-19, it finally caught me. I am vaccinated, but I am high-risk, immunocompromised, have heart, lung, and vascular disease, and all are associated with the rare genetic syndrome, 22Q11.2 deletion syndrome. As careful as I was, the virus somehow found its way into my system and began its attack.

There is nothing glamorous about a life with stiff person syndrome (SPS) in general, but I have noticed over the years that support is severely lacking for teens and young adults with the condition in support groups. Some have been so traumatized by the loss of quality of life, pain, and disease before diagnosis, they refuse to even talk to other young warriors. Others have resigned themselves to believing they are dying soon, and some are still in that seven-plus-year diagnostic limbo awaiting a diagnosis and/or effective treatment.

Every time I put my foot in the stirrup and fling myself up on my horse Belle, I know I’m trusting her with my life. I know she has a lot more power and strength than I do, and I know she could unintentionally have me on the ground in a millisecond. I know all this, yet I still choose to climb onboard.
