I have struggled with self-harm in many forms on and off since I was 13. It’s been a battle, to say the least. I’ve had some time periods without it, but I’ve also had a lot of time in the trenches of it.

As of right now, I’m happy to say I am two months and 13 days clean. It’s so hard, starting the conversation if you think someone may be hurting themselves, so here is some advice from someone who is on the other end of this. 1.

Don’t ask for proof. Please don’t ask to see any part of our body to prove to you that we are harming ourselves. It really makes the shame even worse, and truthfully, even if it is coming from a place of care and concern, it can come off as unempathetic. 2.
