Whenever I read an article after someone dies by suicide, I see a common quote: “I didn’t know they were going through a tough time.” I have depression and anxiety, first diagnosed in January 2016, and over the years I have noticed my signs, or my tells, of when I’m going through depression have changed. I’m a quiet person, but with my first year of depression I become so quiet that people were genuinely surprised I talked or had the ability to smile. Now, you wouldn’t know I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

Usually when someone says “drink plenty of water” — or anything along those lines — I pretty much roll my eyes. I mean come on, it’s common sense, right? So why did I cry in my truck after I left my cardiologist, just because he said “it’s important for you to stay hydrated.”

I want to talk about how burnout impacts me and my body with endometriosis. Despite all my best efforts to stay within my usual health baseline, it doesn’t always work and there are days I can accept that more easily than others.

Fibromyalgia is a condition largely marked by widespread, chronic pain. I find that sometimes my pain gets so severe that I consider going to the emergency room to find some relief. Unfortunately, going to the emergency room for chronic pain can be difficult. In general, individuals are encouraged to reach out to their primary care doctor or another medical professional on their team when they are experiencing such intense pain before considering going to the emergency room. It has also been advised that all individuals with chronic pain work with a chronic pain specialist. It is important to have this physician on your team if at all possible so that you have someone you can go to when you are experiencing severe pain without having to go to the emergency room.

When chronic illness poses a threat to your identity, it isn’t easy to reach acceptance of who you are. The person you used to be is no longer, and the person you’d like to become is unknown. Being diagnosed with any chronic illness alters our reality — past, present, and future.

The irony that I’m writing this story after testing positive for COVID-19 and being in isolation for three days is not lost on me. That wasn’t quite the angle of the story to begin with, but my current state of health has reinforced the underlying points I had intended to make about maximizing good days in anticipation of the inevitable and unpredictable arrival of those days where doing anything seems impossible.

My dreamscape is vivid, almost lucid — a tapestry of places I’ve been and seen and only imagined, but somehow recognizable even in the depths of my dream. I’m in a strange house, but I know it belongs to a close friend. I shouldn’t be there, I think. I try to leave when I see the window open; was it me? Had I come in this way? But I know it isn’t, because I look through the house only to find her, lifeless. She’s been murdered. The killer is out there. I jump through the window and run over the hills and fields that overlook my town, broken over the death of my friend. That’s when I hear the police sirens behind me; they think I did it. They’re coming for me.

June 9th was my first Pride parade! It was also my first Pride parade being out as bisexual! In addition to these exciting things, I attended with the first person I came out to. It was a really exciting day and I’ll hold onto these memories as the time I fought back against my struggles and reclaimed my identity.
